Indonesian Military (TNI) chief Gen. Moeldoko says the TNI has selected two qualified military personnel with the rank of brigadier general to occupy the strategic positions of secretary-general and internal supervisor at the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). Moeldoko explained the two were from the Army. The individual who would occupy the secretary-general post had managerial skills while the other for the internal supervisor post was a senior officer in the Military Police, tribunnews.com reported on Saturday.

According to our Constitution, every healthy citizen of Indonesia has freedom of employment including the retired TNI personnel occupying any position in any instance such as KPK. I wish them success!

So there will be both police and military investigators inside the KPK.

Presumably they will be free from outside influences and free from conflicts of interest as the KPK does not investigate corrupt military personnel (who does, I wonder?). What will their real job be? And to whom will they be reporting? Does anyone know?

I fervently hope and pray that these two will act according to the law and counter the widespread corruption within the TNI and counter the power that the police have brought to bear on the entire system and indeed the job of the KPK. I hope this is the balancing act that the government has made to improve and empower the KPK.

These are appointments that can maybe improve the authority of the KPK if the persons from the TNI will provide military discipline in the enforcement work carried out by the KPK. Eradicating corruption in Indonesia is not an easy task when it is so endemic and is widespread within the various government bodies.
Maybe this is a sign of President Jokowi's intent to address the corruption problem, which is a primary cause of the many problems faced by the country. It can only be hoped that the transfer of these two TNI personnel is not just for show. However a systematic plan must be in place to allow an orderly clean-up that will hopefully control, if not eradicate, this serious social ill that is hampering both economic growth and social improvements in the country.
