he administration plans to increase the beef supply to anticipate a rise in demand ahead of the fasting month of Ramadhan, which starts in June.
Jakarta Maritime and Agriculture Agency head Darmajuni pointed out that demand for beef during the fasting month usually rose by between 10 percent and 20 percent.
'Current demand stands at 161 tons per day. My agency has worked with [city-owned slaughterhouse] PD Darmajaya to anticipate the potential increase in demand. For the Idul Fitri holiday we may need 200 tons of beef a day,' he said at City Hall on Wednesday.
To secure supply, the agency has worked with the Central Java and East Java administrations, which are among Jakarta's biggest beef suppliers.
Darmajuni said his agency would work to control the beef price, which is expected to remain at no higher than Rp 100,000 (US$7.60) per kilogram.
The city administration also plans to allocate 50 tons of subsidized beef, to be sold at Rp 40,000 per kilogram, for underprivileged residents.
