Vice President Jusuf Kalla has ordered the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) to handle the Rohingya asylum seeker situation in Aceh, where many are stranded.

BNPB spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the agency would soon set up a coordination meeting on Saturday to follow up on the order.

"This is a humanitarian issue. Indonesia should properly help. BNPB is ready," Sutopo said on Saturday as quoted by kompas.com.

According to Sutopo, the number of people stranded in Aceh over the past week an a half has reached 1,722.

Five hundred sixty people were sheltered in North Aceh, 47 in Aceh Tamiang, 433 in East Aceh and 682 in Langsa.
