s many as 75 teams from 31 universities participated in the 2015 Indonesian Robot Regional I Sumatra contest held in the Dempo Jakabaring sports hall in Palembang, South Sumatra, on Sunday.
The robot contest, which was participated in by universities from across Sumatra, including Batam and Bangka-Belitung, was a creative event during which participants competed to design and build robots. Officials from the Culture and Elementary and Secondary Education Ministry's higher education directorate general became the jury of the competition.
The directorate's research and community services director, Agus Subekti, said the event offered five categories.
Among the categories were a fire-extinguisher robot and a soccer robot, as well as a dancing robot also called the Cakil robot after a noble wayang (shadow puppet) character with a protruding lower jaw ' contests that aimed to select the best robot inventions to be included in a national robot contest scheduled for May 11 to 14.
Agus said the inventions of the national level contest's winners would be included in an international robot competition which would include robot inventors from countries worldwide.
He said for this year's robot contest for Regional I Sumatra, a selection committee screened a number of robot inventions and decided that 71 teams from 31 universities were eligible to participate in the contest, during which their works would be appraised again based on their quality and creativity.
'In the dancing robot, there is a voice censor; so each time music from the traditional dance performance Bambangan Cakil plays, the robot will dance. It will stop dancing if the music stops,' said Wahyu Nugraha Firnando, a contest participant, as quoted by Antara news agency in Jakarta on Sunday.
He said the robot contest was aimed at introducing sophisticated robot technology to younger generations, especially university students. It was hoped that the contest could become a positive place to develop and grow creative ideas of young people amid growing influences of unhealthy youth associations. (dyl/ebf)(+++)
