crash involving a Bangunkarta passenger train serving Jakarta-Surabaya and a freight train at Waruduwur Station in Astana Japura district, Cirebon, West Java, on Saturday evening has disrupted train traffic on the northern Java railway route, a railway operator official has said.

The head of state railway operator KAI regional office (Daop) IV Semarang, Suprapto, said trains on three lines had been disrupted by the accident on Saturday evening. They were the Brantas train serving the Jakarta-Kediri line, the Matarmaja train serving Jakarta-Malang and the Gumarang train serving the Jakarta-Surabaya line.

He said the accident in which the Bangunkarta train rammed a freight train from behind occurred at 6:45 p.m. local time on Saturday when the latter was stationary at Waruduwur Station.

'€œThe arrivals and departures of three trains were delayed as they had to take an alternative route to avoid the line near Waruduwur Station, which could not function due to the accident. The normal route was Cirebon-Brebes-Tegal, but after the accident they had to take the Cirebon-Prupuk-Slawi-Tegal route,'€ said Suprapto,

'€œBy taking that route, the trains had to travel 40 kilometers farther,'€ he added. (ebf)
