s the police and their lawyers failed to show up, the South Jakarta District Court postponed the first hearing on a petrial petition filed by Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigator Novel Baswedan.
'The defendant is absent and we have waited until 12 p.m. This is not fair, is it?' said judge Suhairi, who is the sole judge hearing the pretrial petition, on Monday.
Of the 27 lawyers hired by the KPK to accompany Novel in the pretrial petition hearings, nine were present at the court.
The nine lawyers called on the judge to reschedule court proceedings to the immediate future for efficiency sake.
'We request to reschedule the hearing to as soon as possible because, according to rule of thumb, a hearing can be adjourned only for three days and we hope the hearing will resume on Thursday,' Asfinawati, a member of Novel's legal team, was quoted as saying by kompas.com on Monday.
Novel was named a suspect and arrested recently for allegedly torturing a suspected swallow's nest thief in police custody in Panjang Ujung, Bengkulu, in 2004. (rms)(+++)
