ore than 4,000 Yogyakarta residents and tourists participated in the Jogja Nite Run, a fun run over a distance of 5 kilometers, with the route passing heritage sites in the city, on Saturday evening.
Starting from the parking lot in front of Bank Indonesia's (BI) Yogyakarta office, participants ran pass cultural preservation areas such as Kota Baru and Jl. Mangkubumi, Malioboro, on their way to the finishing line at the city's Point Zero.
'About 4,200 runners participated in the Jogja Nite Run,' said an organizing committee official, Haryanto, on Saturday evening.
Held for the first time this year, it was initially expected that Jogja Nite Run would attract no more than 4,000 participants. However, the event, which offered a car and motorcycles as prizes, drew more runners.
'We hope that Jogja Nite Run can become a routine event organized attractively so it becomes a tourist event,' said Haryanto added that several foreign runners, such as Australians and Germans, had participated in the event.
Another Jogja Nite Run organizing committee official, Syaifullah, said the event was also aimed at creating awareness of the importance of exercise and to promote domestically made products.
'All participants were required to wear locally manufactured sport shoes provided by the organizing committee, not imported sports shoes,' he said. (ebf)
