he Chinese government said it was ready to share with Indonesia the results of laboratory tests on synthetic rice allegedly imported from China, in efforts to address the plastic rice issue in the country.
The Indonesian trade attache in Beijing, Dandy Iswara, said that according to the deputy director general of the Chinese Quality Control, Inspection and Quarantine Office (AQISIQ), Bi Kexin, Indonesia should have comprehensive evidence that synthetic rice found in Indonesian markets was imported from or supplied by Chinese companies.
Bi said the AQISIQ had determined that rice mixed with plastic grains had not been found in China.
'If it was found in China, it would be so costly that it would not be economically feasible to market for consumption,' Dandy quoted Bi as saying.
Kompas.com reported that Bi hoped that the synthetic rice issue would not negatively affect relations between the two countries, including bilateral trade cooperation.
'All relevant sides in the two countries should settle the issue proportionately,' he said.
The Indonesian government has insisted that it had not issued any permits for rice imports, including from China.
President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo is scheduled to lead a limited Cabinet meeting with relevant ministers and government officials Tuesday to discuss the synthetic rice issue at the State Palace. (rms)(++++)
