residential Advisory Council member Hasyim Muzadi has urged the government to discuss with Myanmar the fate of Rohingya asylum seekers currently stranded in Indonesia.
"The most important step is to help them for the sake of humanitarianism. We should accommodate them first and then conduct diplomacy with Myanmar," he said on Monday as quoted by Antara news agency.
"Tell Myanmar: Many of your citizens are now stranded in Indonesia," the former chairman of Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), said.
In a related development, chairman of the East Java branch of NU's Ansor youth wing Rudi Tri Wachid said, "The humanitarian tragedy of the Rohingya ethnic minority group is imminent. Thousands of them have lost their lives and thousand others are adrift on the sea and suffering from starvation.'
He called on the government to sever diplomatic ties with Myanmar and to recall the Indonesian ambassador to Myanmar. The United Nations should also impose sanctions on Myanmar, he said.
The Rohingya minority group should be granted their human rights and protection, he noted.
"The Rohingya tragedy should not be seen as a religious issue because it is more of ethnic genocide," he remarked. (hhr)(++++)
