Dozens of Filipinos deported from Manado

U

p to 44 Filipinos, who were working as crewmembers on illegal fishing vessels that were detained by Indonesian authorities, were deported to their country of origin on Tuesday.

Bayu Suharto, one of the investigators at the Bitung maritime affairs and fishery supervision base, said that the deportation was carried out through coordination with the immigration office and the Philippine consulate general in Manado.

"All of the Philippine citizens were found to have illegally fished on Indonesian territorial waters. The deported 44 were among 53 people verified by the Philippine consulate general office," Bayu said.

Jeacky Gerald Gerung of the Bitung Immigration office said that the deportation was conducted because the 44 people were found guilty of violating Article 113 and 119 of Law No. 6/2011 on immigration. "Nine other Filipinos still have to stand trial for their alleged involvement in fish poaching," he said.

The 44 people are being temporarily held in the Malendeng immigration detention house until they are collected by a Philippine warship that is to berth in Bitung on May 31, he added. (hhr)(++++)
