Georgia, RI pursuing closer cooperation

Georgia is seeking to cooperate more with Indonesia in various areas, including in trade, culture and education, an envoy says.

Georgian Ambassador to Indonesia, Zurab Aleksidze, said that the Foreign Affair Ministry of Georgia and Indonesia would soon sign a memorandum of understanding on trade and education.

"Since the establishment of the embassy in December 2012, Georgia and Indonesia have had friendly relations as we share the same values of democracy, sovereignty and territorial integrity," Ambassador Aleksidze said in the opening speech of Georgian national day celebrations in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The same remark was voiced by National Development and Planning Minister Andrinof Chaniago, as the Indonesian government's representative at the event.

He cited data reporting that the amount of trade between Indonesia and Georgia had reached US$80 million in 2014 and that this level of exports is notably the highest in the ASEAN region.

"This number will continue to improve in the future," Andrianof said.

The newly established Georgian embassy also seeks to familiarize Indonesians with the country even further, as it has been involved in cultural events in Jakarta to promote and introduce the country's rich culture.

Aleksidze gave the example of Georgia's involvement in this year's Java Jazz Festival, when Georgian jazz group Iriao introduced the country's ethnic jazz. (fsu)(++++)
