Greater Jakarta: Illegal settlements torn down in W. Jakarta

S

ome 500 personnel from the police, military, fire services, Jakarta Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) and the West Jakarta Sanitation Agency dismantled on Tuesday hundreds of homes on the embankment of the West Flood Canal in Jati Pulo, West Jakarta.

The houses, which were built in six community units, were dismantled as they were considered an eyesore for the area.

'€œThe illegal houses made the West Flood Canal area look like a slum,'€ Palmerah district head Zeri Ronazy said as quoted by beritajakarta.com.

The West Flood Canal flows through densely populated areas in Grogol, West Jakarta. The canal was built during the Dutch colonial era to redirect the Ciliwung River'€™s flow to outside the old town of Batavia.

The illegal homes were also considered to have disrupted the river'€™s water flow during the rainy season.
