he US is ready to assist Indonesia, through the UN, to handle the Southeast Asian refugee crisis, US Ambassador to Indonesia Robert O. Blake, Jr. has stated.
'If the UN agency in charge of refugee crises requests assistance from us, then the United States will assist the agency happily,' Blake said on Tuesday.
He lauded Indonesia's efforts in dealing with Rohingya asylum seekers currently stranded in Indonesia.
'I welcome the initiative to independently search and rescue Rohingya asylum seekers adrift at sea,' he said.
Earlier, a member of the Presidential Advisory Board (Wantimpres) Hasyim Muzadi urged the government to coordinate with all parties to provide shelter for Rohingya migrants.
'The most important step is to help [the migrants] first, for the sake of humanity [...] then [Indonesia should] conduct diplomacy with Myanmar [to help solve the root of the crisis],' he said.
