eople in quake-hit Nepal are in dire need of shelters before the arrival of monsoon rains expected to begin within the next few weeks, a Nepalese religious leader is saying.
'Almost 600,000 people in Nepal now badly need houses. We also need tents; however, it is only temporary in nature. As the monsoon comes, there might be landslides and the non-permanent infrastructures might be destroyed,' said the general secretary of the National Council of Churches in Nepal, K.B. Rokaya, on the sidelines of a congress in Ancol, North Jakarta, on Wednesday.
The United Nations has reportedly aimed to make a general international appeal worth US$423 million for its agencies working in Nepal to accelerate the response as they work against the clock as the monsoons draw near.
There were an estimated 2.8 million people in need of humanitarian assistance with more than 860,000 people in immediate need caused by a loss of shelter, limited road access and poverty since the big earthquakes hit the country, according to UN data. (fsu/ebf)(+++)
