Pertamina told to pay Rp 12b for Cilacap oil spills

round 17,000 fishermen in Cilacap regency, Central Java, are demanding that state oil and gas company Pertamina'€™s Refinery Unit IV Cilacap pay Rp 12 billion (US$912,000) in compensation for losses they suffered as a result of the company'€™s oil spills in Cilacap waters.

The fishermen claim Pertamina Cilacap'€™s crude oil spilled during a loading and unloading process several days ago, inflicting a huge amount of losses on them.

The head of Cilacap'€™s Indonesian Fishermen Association (HNSI), Indon Cahyono, said it had drafted a compensation demand letter that included the amount of compensation they were seeking.

He said that more than 17,000 fishermen affected by the oil spills would file a compensation demand to Pertamina.

'€œWe have calculated losses suffered by Cilacap fishermen due to the oil spills. We have also calculated a reasonable amount of compensation that we will file against Pertamina,'€ said Indon in Cilacap on Wednesday.

Based on their calculations, he said, the total amount of compensation they would seek from Pertamina reached around Rp 12 billion.

Reno, 45, one of the leaders of the Cilacap fishermen, said the oil spills had caused them to lose their livelihoods for at least two weeks.

'€œSince last Friday, almost all Cilacap fishermen have not been able to go to sea to fish. All fish have swam further out, seeking clean, unpolluted waters,'€ he told The Jakarta Post.

Reno said all Cilacap fishermen and HNSI local branches had agreed to seek daily compensation of Rp 100,000 per person, for 17,000 fishermen for 14 days.

'€œThe total amount of compensation is around Rp 11.9 billion,'€ said Reno, adding that the compensation demand was minimal as in Cilacap, around 30,000 fishermen had been likely impacted by the oil spills. (ebf)(+++)
