engkulu Governor Junaidi Hamsyah has urged the central government to raise the minimum marriage age to 18, as child marriage has become one of the factors driving a rising divorce rate that has reached 2,000 cases per year in the province.
'One of the push factors for divorce is child marriage,' Junaidi said. 'There are many people who enter marriage before they are ready.'
Child marriage has also contributed to women dying during childbirth, he said.
He urged the central government to review the provision in Law No. 1/1974 on marriage that sets the minimum marriage age at 16, Antara news agency reported.
