engkulu Governor Junaidi Hamsyah has urged the central government to raise the minimum marriage age to 18, as child marriage has become one of the factors driving a rising divorce rate that has reached 2,000 cases per year in the province.

'€œOne of the push factors for divorce is child marriage,'€ Junaidi said. '€œThere are many people who enter marriage before they are ready.'€

Child marriage has also contributed to women dying during childbirth, he said.

He urged the central government to review the provision in Law No. 1/1974 on marriage that sets the minimum marriage age at 16, Antara news agency reported.
