he refusal of the National Police's Detective Corps cheif, Comr. Gen. Budi Waseso, to report his wealth to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has created a polemic among the public.
The deputy chairman of House of Representatives Commission III on law, Benny K Harman, and commission member Nasir Djamil have both urged Budi to comply with the law.
Benny said Kwik Kian Gie had also refused to report his wealth to the commission when he was coordinating minister for the economy because there was no punishment for the failure to do so. He said that ethically, Budi should report his wealth to set a good example to other police officers.
Coordinator of the Commission of Missing Person and Victims of Violence chairman Haris Azhar slammed Budi's stance, which he said was against the law. He said Budi should step down if he did not want to report his wealth, otherwise it could encourage other police officials to follow suit.
Bambang Widodo Umar, a police observer working at the University of Indonesia, slammed Budi's defiance. He said Budi's stance could tarnish the police force's image and damage people's confidence in the police.
Vice President Jusuf Kalla stated that Budi was a simple person who did not have a lot of wealth and that it was therefore no problem if he did not report his wealth to the commission.
'I know Budi well and his wealth is not much because he is very simple,' Kalla was quoted as saying by kompas.com. (rms)(++++)
