he government should accelerate development in eastern Indonesia to close the disparity gap with western Indonesia, a transportation executive said Thursday.
'There are problems that stem from disparity in development between the eastern and western parts of Indonesia," a member of the general advisor council for taxis at the Jakarta branch of the Organization of Land Transportation Owners (Organda), Adrianto Djokosoetono, said.
Adrianto, who is also director of taxi operator PT Blue Bird, said the disparity had led to a high rate of migration to Java Island, which in turn caused high rates of unemployment, crime and high traffic on the island.
The majority of domestic investment is in Java at 64.47 percent, compared to 35.33 percent on islands outside Java, according to the Industry Ministry's directorate general of industrial area development data.
The problems of inadequate infrastructure and a lack of energy needed to run businesses in eastern Indonesia were frequently cited as the cause of the low investment rate.
Adrianto said his company had been conducting feasibility studies on the possibility of Blue Bird expanding its business into eastern Indonesia.
However, he said the company had a presence in Manado, North Sulawesi, through its Blue Bird taxi and Golden Bird limousine services. Blue Bird also operates the Holiday Resort Hotel at Senggigi Beach, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara.
'The industry's growth also relies on government support,' Adrianto said. (fsu/nvn)
