Islands in focus: Govt to build fishing ports to stop poaching

T

he government will develop two fishing ports in Riau Islands to prevent poaching by foreign ships around Natuna waters and the South China Sea, a local official has said.

The head of the provincial chapter of the Border Management Agency, Edy Sofyan, said that the ports would be built in Natuna and on Anambas Island.

'€œThe ports will function as entry points for ships fishing in Natuna and Anambas waters to reduce illegal fishing activities,'€ he said.

The ports will also support the development of the fishery product processing industry, enabling local people to play a greater role in the development of the industry, both at the downstream and upstream levels.

The two ports will be developed at Lampa Strait in Natuna and in Antang, Anambas Island. The integrated fishing port in Lampa Strait was expected to cost up to Rp 150 billion for physical development, Edy went on, while that in Antang would cost Rp 95 billion.
