Police rescue 65 asylum seekers stranded in Rote Ndao

Rote Ndao Police in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) rescued on Sunday night 65 asylum seekers stranded on waters around Landu Ti Island.

Rote Ndao Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Hidayat confirmed the incident on Monday, saying that the police were investigating the case.

He further disclosed that 54 of the asylum seekers were from Sri Lanka, 10 from Bangladesh and one from Myanmar.

"Another asylum seeker and a ship crew member fled and are still at large," Hidayat said as quoted by Antara news agency.

Hidayat further said that the asylum seekers had been headed for Australia, but failed to reach the country after being driven out by Australian authorities.

The asylum seekers were on two wooden ships and are now being accommodated in a temporary shelter belonging to a village head. (hhr)
