Festival committee head Darusalam said pandan wangi (fragrant pandan gemstone) had been the most popular gemstone among Betawi people for a long time.
'Betawi people already wore gemstones long before it became a trend,' he said.
He added that certain gemstones could show someone's social status.
'Those who have gone on the haj would wear sapphires, while those who have not would wear pandan gemstones,' he said as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
The opening of the 10th Palang Pintu Festival on Saturday saw a symbolic handout of pandan gemstones to some officials, including Jakarta Tourism Agency deputy head Sylviana Murni, South Jakarta Mayor Syamsuddin Noor and Manpower Minister Muhammad Hanif Dhakiri.
