nstitute for Essential Service Reform (IESR) executive director Fabby Tumiwa has called on the government to devise a large-scale solar cell power project to reduce energy costs.
'The cost of solar-powered energy has dropped in recent years. The problem in Indonesia is that existing regulations don't make it easy for low-cost energy sources to be implemented. We need a large-scale project, for example a massive 50x10 MW solar panel project. That would reduce costs,' Fabby told reporters on the sidelines of a nuclear energy event on Sunday.
The expert added that the government should look to China, which has built a 2,000-megawatt solar thermal power plant.
China is known as the world leader in producing photovoltaic panels, solar-powered energy sources that can be installed on residential rooftops.
In Brazil, Fabby said, solar-powered energy only cost US 9 cents per kWh, while a recent Jordanian solar power plant project cost 6.5 cents per kWh.
The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry previously stated that it would increase its budget allocations for the development of the renewable energy in the coming years to bolster its programs to reduce Indonesia's reliance on fossil fuels. It also said it would propose Rp 25 trillion (US$1.9 billion) worth of budget allocations next year, Rp 10 trillion of which would be for renewable energy development.
