Rohingya migrants
The secretary-general of the World Zakat Forum, Ahmad Juwaini, has said Rohingya refugees from Myanmar are eligible to receive zakat (alms), infaq (voluntarily alms) and shadaqah or waqf.
'We are calling for alms institutions and world humanity organizations to help Rohingya refugees,' he said as quoted by Antara in Banda Aceh on Tuesday.
The secretary-general's statement was one of several points from a joint statement of international alms institutions and humanity organizations on the Rohingya refugee crisis.
Overall, Ahmad said, the World Zakat Forum was calling for all Muslims and the world community to give special assistance to Rohingya refugees.
'We are also urging ASEAN, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the United Nations and other multilateral organizations to impose political and economic sanctions on Myanmar,' he said on the sidelines of a world zakat seminar in Banda Aceh.
Representatives of 10 countries and Banda Aceh mayor Illiza Sa'aduddin Djamal also attended the event.
Ahmad said the seminar participants were urging all countries, especially Myanmar's neighboring countries, to accept Rohingya refugees and give them aid as needed.
He said persecution and violence against ethnic Rohingya violated international laws and human values. (ebf)(+++)
