ouse of Representatives Deputy Speaker Agus Hermanto said on Wednesday that the Supreme Court's decision to impose a heavier sentence on former Democratic Party chairman Anas Urbaningrum for his involvement in graft and money laundering cases should be respected and not debated.
Agus, also a Democratic Party senior member, said the court's ruling to increase Anas' sentence from eight to 14 years behind bars should not be interfered with any further, because the decision was fully based on Indonesia's legal system.
'There is no need to comment on [Anas'] sentence. Let the legal process take its course. The case is in the hands of the law, thus we don't need to interfere in anything,' he said at the House in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday.
Aside from a heavier jail sentence, Anas also had his political role stripped from him, meaning that he will be unable to return to politics upon his release.
In September 2014, the Jakarta Corruption Court sentenced Anas to eight years behind bars and demanded he make restitution payments of Rp 57.5 billion (US$4.3 million) and $5.2 million after finding him guilty of corruption and money laundering. JP/ebf
