rade Minister Rachmat Gobel has said Indonesia will import 270,000 head of cattle from Australia to meet the growing demand for beef ahead of Ramadhan and Idul Fitri.
He said that ahead of the two Muslim festivities, domestic beef supplies would likely be insufficient to meet demand and thus the government needed to import cattle.
'We have to import cattle because domestic beef production cannot meet increasing demand,' Rachmat said as quoted by Antara on the sidelines of a visit to Gede Market in Surakarta, Central Java.
The minister further said the government did not need to import several other commodities, such as shallots and red chillies, despite increases in demand.
He said several shallot producing regions had entered the harvest season, so that some commodity prices were declining.
At Gede Market, he said as an example that shallots sold for Rp 32,000 (US$2.40) per kilogram from Rp 30,000 previously.
Rachmat said the price of red chillies, which had skyrocketed to Rp 80,000 per kilogram last year, was down to only Rp 20,000 while the price of tomatoes had dropped to Rp 6,000 per kilogram from Rp 8,000 previously.
The prices of vegetables at Gede Market are stable with sufficient supplies, he added. (ebf)
