E

ight senior academics at Padang-based Andalas University (Unand), one of the country'€™s oldest state universities, are in contention for the position of the university'€™s rector for the 2015-2019 leadership term.

'€œBy the time we closed the registration period today [Friday], all eight prospective candidates had returned their completed registration forms and all supporting documents,'€ selection committee secretary Harry Effendi Iskandar said, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Among the candidates are Unand'€™s school of medicine dean Masrul, economics professor Fasbier Noer Sidin, pharmacy professor Marlina and incumbent rector Werry Darta Taifur.

The candidates have a month to present their candidacies to their peers, who will later cast their decisions in an open vote held in late July. The five candidates who receive the most votes will then go forward for a follow-up selection held in front of members of the university'€™s academic senate.

The senate will pick the best three candidates to be endorsed in the final selection meeting jointly held by the senate and the Research and Technology and Higher Education Ministry in August.

Founded in 1956, Unand is the first state university established on Sumatra Island. It currently offers hundreds of programs in 15 faculties.
