eneral Elections Commission (KPU) member Sigit Pamungkas said on Tuesday that voter turnout in the upcoming simultaneous regional elections was targeted to reach 78 percent.
'This is 3 percent higher than the voter participation in the 2014 elections, which reached 75 percent,' he said as quoted by Antara.
The commissioner was speaking after he attended a coordination meeting to prepare simultaneous elections for regional heads at the KPU Bengkulu office on Tuesday.
Sigit said voter turnout between 71 and 75 percent was considered successful for a democratic country.
He said KPU offices at provinces, regencies and municipalities were ready to carry out simultaneous regional elections in 269 regions. They had set up ad hoc bodies and poll committees for the elections. Regional authorities were all ready both in terms of election budgets and regulations.
'Ten regulations have been issued by the government for the implementation of the simultaneous regional elections,' said Sigit.
He said the main thing KPU and all regional elements must work on was to consolidate all of the preparations to implement regional elections and to promote participation and integrity.
The commissioner said a huge budget allocated by local administrations to hold simultaneous elections should not be wasted.
'We have made field visits to several areas, including Bengkulu, which will hold simultaneous regional elections to monitor their readiness,' said Sigit. (ebf)(+++)
