burizal Bakri, the Golkar Party chairman elected in the party's national meeting in Bali, has said regional elections (Pilkada) are not important for Golkar because victory does not translate into more votes in national legislative elections.
Regional elections, according to Aburizal, are important for regional candidates, but not for Golkar. As an example, he pointed out that Golkar's victories in last year's regional elections had had no influence on the party's performance in the subsequent national elections.
'Golkar won 59 percent of all votes during the 2014 regional elections, but it only gained 14.6 percent of votes in the legislative election that year. Regional elections do not correlate with vote gains in the legislative elections at all,' Aburizal told reporters at the House of Representatives complex on Wednesday.
The veteran politician said he still hoped that Golkar could participate in the upcoming regional elections, which are scheduled for Dec. 9, but stressed the importance of party unity, which Golkar has struggled with of late.
'If Golkar is united again, we will participate, whether this year or next year,' he said. (ebf)(++++)
