The Jakarta chapter of the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) confiscated more than Rp 500 million (US$37,500) worth of illegal products during an operation on Wednesday.

The BPOM confiscated the products, consisting of 7,762 packages of 22 varieties of illegal foodstuff, and 96 packages of two kinds of illegal cosmetics from a warehouse in a complex on Jl. Elang Laut Block I, Pantai Indah Kapuk, North Jakarta.

'€œThe illegal food and cosmetics found are baby products, including cereal, ready-to-serve baby food, biscuit and snacks, as well as soap and shampoo,'€ said BPOM in a release on Thursday.

The agency said that based on information from suspected distributors, the products were all marketed online.

'€œConsumers can order and buy them online, after which the products are delivered to their home addresses. The suspects claim they also bought the products online,'€ said the agency.

Nationally, BPOM found 36,207 packages of food products that did not meet standards during a food- and cosmetic- monitoring drive from May 25 to June 18. The products comprised 18,701 packages of illegal food, 15,708 packages of expired food and 1,799 packages of damaged food, with a total worth of more than Rp 1.5 billion.

The agency also found more than Rp 257 million worth of 12,770 illegal cosmetics containing dangerous substances.

'€œConsumers must be careful about buying products, especially products marketed online,'€ the agency said. (ebf)(+++)
