AKARTA: The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has turned down a request from the United Development Party (PPP) to temporarily release former PPP chairman Suryadharma Ali, who is being held suspect in a graft case in connection with the haj pilgrimage fund at the Religious Affairs Ministry in 2012 and 2013.
Deputy KPK chairman Indriyanto Senoadji said on Friday that the request had been rejected because the suspect's dossier was nearing completion and the trial at the corruption court could begin soon.
'Suryadharma's arrest cannot be suspended. We reject [the request]. The investigation into the case is close to completion and the process will be expedited,' he said as quoted by kompas.com.
A number of PPP politicians and officials held a prayer session at the KPK building on Thursday in the vain hope that their request for the suspension of Suryadharma's arrest would be accepted. (rms)
