Cambodia seizes meth, heroin in biggest drug bust in years

ambodian police say they have made one of their biggest drug seizures in several years, netting 55 kilograms (121 pounds) of methamphetamine and heroin.

Two Chinese men and a Cambodian woman were arrested at four locations this past week in the capital Phnom Penh, police said at a news conference Saturday.

Gen. Mok Chito, deputy chief of National Police, said the drugs came from the Golden Triangle area, where the borders of Myanmar, Thailand and Laos meet, and were destined for Cambodia and markets abroad.

The U.S. State Department's annual report on drug trafficking, issued in March, said Cambodia faced a significant and growing problem with drug use, trafficking, and production.

"Crackdowns on drug trafficking in Thailand and China in recent years have pushed traffickers to use alternate routes, including through Cambodia," the report said. It cited an increase in making, distributing and using methamphetamine and similar stimulants in particular.

Mok Chito said the seized drugs were worth $3 million and that police were hunting the Cambodian leader of the trafficking ring, who was thought to have gone into hiding. (ika)
