he Tana Toraja Regency Police in South Sulawesi have beefed up security in the Kelapa Pitu district following the murder of a priest and a village chief in the region on Sunday.
Tana Toraja Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Yopie Indra Prasetyo Sepang said on Monday that the victims were identified as Magdalena Pare, 55, chief of Pong Torra village, Kelapa Pitu district, North Toraja, and Rev. Ruben Lapuk, 60, who were the mother and father of their prime suspect, Elias, 32.
Yopie said the murder took place on Sunday at around 11:15 a.m. local time, as the Christian community in the village was praying at the Segala Bangsa Church in To' Induk Lolai village, Kelapa Pitu district.
'Actually, the [suspect] is a musician. He often accompanied prayers at the church by playing the organ. Before the incident, he was playing the organ and his father was heading the prayer,' said Yopie
He said the victims were attacked at the rear of the church and died at the scene. Police say their suspect tried to escape but fell and fainted and was still being treated at a hospital.
