Several officials with roles in the management of Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta are likely to lose their jobs following President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo'€™s rage over protracted delays in the inflow and outflow of containers in the country'€™s biggest seaport.

Cabinet Secretary Andi Widjajanto said on Thursday that several officials would be dismissed due to their inability to solve a problem widely known to be on the President'€™s priority list.

'€œSeveral officials will get fired soon. We should just wait,'€ said Andi, refusing to name the officials.

'€œThe President will have no hesitation in replacing the officials, whether they are on the board of directors of state companies or officials at ministerial level,'€ he said.

Your comments:

A massive shakeup and administrative overhaul of all elements involved in the management and process running of Tanjung Priok has been very long overdue.

I just hope however that President Jokowi knows his port from his starboard before throwing all of his containers out of the window.

Jokowi should have asked or formulated first a remedial procedure to the problem before a trial or final flow inspection on the pier. The port authorities and the President'€™s office both do not know what the head wanted the hands to do.

The President threatening '€œheads will roll'€ sums it all up....you are no longer a governor Sir!! We don'€™t need your anger on TV and a further Rupiah decline the next day! You have forced a lot of Indonesians to fast even before Ramadhan.

If there was ever a chance for Jokowi to prove himself to the Indonesian people en masse then this has to be it.

This is a golden opportunity to get rid of all the corrupt officials who are currently involved in the management of the port and to immediately amalgamate the 10 institutions into one workable authority that is responsible for all inspections, clearances, issuance of permits etc. Do this immediately, don'€™t just threaten '€” do it now!

When I read of actual significant port management improvements then I'€™ll start to believe you. Right now this article is just an empty rhetorical speech, Mr. President.

Delays tend to be deliberate as the longer ships are in port then the higher the port fees will be and that results in more profit for the port authority. The same applies to the containers.

Jokowi certainly wants the situation changed as he has stated earlier that he wants Indonesia to be a leading maritime nation, or maritime superpower, or something like that.

It will be interesting to see what happens and whether in a year from now the situation will be any better or not.

Singapore is what it is today not because it is good and knows what to do but because the countries around her persist in deliberately screwing up their own self interest! Malaysia with its bumiputra rule and Indonesia with its rampant corruption! A huge container ship makes money by its ability to turn around quickly and cross the Pacific in hours.

Every minute delayed costs them money and that'€™s why no mother ship will ever use any Indonesian port even though most if not all the cargo is meant for Indonesia! That'€™s money down the drain and into Singapore'€™s pockets. The situation will not change in Indonesia despite all the great sounding words from the President. Too many pockets will be hurt! The status quo will continue and our neighbor will nod knowingly and happily and the poor in Indonesia will remain poor.

So this confirms my belief that the President had not been receiving accurate reports. There are bad consultants around him. He needs to seek better team members and it'€™s not that hard to check and verify.

In the early 1990s, all import shipments were pre-inspected and cleared at the source by SGS. This made the entire import process quick and transparent. However, the system was canceled in favor of returning clearance authority to Indonesia and that is when the chaos returned.
