he parents of a 13-year-old child from Tuban, East Java, have reported a local police officer for allegedly beating their kid during a motorcycle theft investigation.
The report was made on June 18 to the Tuban Police by the parents due to a lack of responsiveness.
"The police are still denying the accusation," Arif Nurfikri from the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) told the press on Tuesday.
Arif said that the victim and the family were accompanied by the Ronggolawe Women Coalition (KPR) as well as Kontras at the moment to follow up on the case.
Kontras has also reported the case to the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI).
The case started when the victim, which went by the initial F, was accused of stealing his neighbor's motorcycle.
Local police officers then detained him when F was playing with his friend in a market.
Before and during the investigation, an official with the initial N allegedly beat F several times, then forced F to strip his clothes, stomped on his chest, and pointed a gun at the child's head and mouth to force him to name the perpetrator of the theft, according to a report revealed by Kontras.
However, F kept on maintaining his innocence, stating that he knew nothing about the theft.
Based on the information retrieved by Kontras, which was also revealed and reported to the KPAI, the victim was also offered Rp 1 million (US$75.3) by the neighbor to confess, which was turned down by the victim.
The victim was then released with bruises on his body. He told his parents that he had been beaten by the police, which was followed up by the parents' report to the Tuban Police.
"We just ask that the KPAI monitor the legal process, because when a case involves a person from a legal institution, the monitoring is typically more challenging than usual," Arif said. (fsu/ika)(++++)
