Seven people were injured when a Transjakarta bus hit eight motorcycles and three cars in Mampang Prapatan, South Jakarta, on Monday. Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Muhammad Iqbal said on Monday that it was possible that the accident was caused by brake failure because no skid marks had been found at the scene.
No fatalities were reported, but three people sustained major injuries, the police said.
'The three are Joni, whose legs were broken, Mulyono with broken bones in his legs and shoulders and Adela Santoso, who was injured on the head, neck and ears,' Iqbal said.
The Transjakarta bus driver, meanwhile, has been detained at the traffic police office on. Jl. MT Haryono in South Jakarta.
City-owned bus operator PT Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta) confirmed the accident and said in a release on Monday that the bus involved was operated by PT Jakarta Trans Metropolitan (JTM).
'The bus had just been refueled at a gas station in Mampang during a one-hour off period when the driver, Undang Kurniawan, hit the gas and made an error in changing gears, causing the bus to jump and hit several vehicles in front of it,' the release stated.
Transjakarta explained in its release that Undang had been hired by JTM just a few days ago and would be fired.
Transjakarta director ANS Kosasih said JTM was fully responsible for the victims' losses.
Records show that there have been at least nine road accidents involving Transjakarta buses since 2014, claiming three lives and more than 28 victims with major and minor injuries.
Meanwhile, Transjakarta introduced on Monday 20 buses procured through the National Procurement Regulatory Body (LKPP) e-catalogue.
The 20 buses were made by Swedish company Scania. Kosasih said each of the articulated buses cost roughly Rp 4.45 billion (US$334,613).
'These are the first buses we procured through the e-catalogue. Previously, buses for Transjakarta were procured through bids,' Kosasih said during the launch at the National Monument (Monas), Central Jakarta.
Kosasih said Transjakarta was currently processing the bus' documents and they would begin operating in July. The buses, he said, would ply Corridor 1 (Blok M in South Jakarta to Kota in West Jakarta, Corridor 8 (Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta to Harmoni in Central Jakarta), Corridor 9 (Pinang Ranti in East Jakarta to Pluit in North Jakarta), Corridor 10 (Tanjung Priok in North Jakarta to Cililitan in East Jakarta), Corridor 11 (Kampung Melayu to Pulogebang in East Jakarta) and Corridor 13 (Pluit to Tanjung Priok in North Jakarta).
Kosasih went on to say that natural gas-powered Scania buses were safer and more comfortable than the buses currently operated by Transjakarta. For example, the buses' interiors are made from fireproof materials.
The 20 buses are part of the 51 Scania buses procured by Transjakarta this year. The remaining 31 buses are expected to arrive in Jakarta in December.
Kosasih said that Scania brand holder PT United Tractor would be responsible for the maintenance of the buses. On the same occasion, Transjakarta also launched a 24-hour hotline for complaints and reports at (021) 1500102. (rbk)
