he Balikpapan General Elections Commission (KPUD) has begun verifying written documents submitted by aspiring independent candidates for the city's mayoralty to assess their eligibility to contest the election, which will be held concurrently with another 268 local polls in December.
KPUD head Noor Thoha said the KPUD had deployed 100 staff members for the verification process, which will last until July 6. Two pairs of independent candidates have registered for the upcoming election and handed over supporting documents for their nomination, including supporting letters from local residents, along with copies of their ID cards.
During verification, KPUD officers will visit every supporter according to the addresses listed on the ID cards. 'The budget for the verification of each supporter is Rp 4,000 (30 US cents),' said KPUD commissioner Sunawiyanto, who is in charge of candidate registration.
