Govt can reject constituency funds, says Kalla

V

ice President Jusuf Kalla has said the government can reject the proposal of constituency funds, if it cannot reach an agreement with the House of Representatives on the matter.

'€œIt is possible [for the government to reject the constituency funds]. There are many ways to do it. In principle, the House and the government will discuss it,'€ said Kalla as quoted by Antara at the Vice Presidential Office in Jakarta on Thursday.

Kalla said basically he agreed that there should be additional funds for the development of electoral districts allocated via their representatives at the House.

However, he said, the amount allocated to constituency funds and the disbursement methods should be examined further.

'€œActually, the proposal has not yet been approved. We have just agreed on the program. The important thing is, how the funds are going to be disbursed and how much. There has been no discussion about it,'€ said Kalla.

Meanwhile, House deputy speaker Taufik Kurniawan said the House was still waiting for the government'€™s stance toward the constituency fund proposal.

He said the House had agreed on a mechanism for allocating the funds. '€œThe House will wait for the government'€™s official stance, which the finance minister [Bambang Brodjonegoro] will convey during the Budgetary Body meeting,'€ he said in Jakarta on Thursday.

When he was asked how the House would react if the government rejected the constituency plan proposal, Taufik said such rejection was normal and the House would not have any objection to lobbying further. (ebf)(+++)
