National scene: Bogor Mayor questioned as witness

T

he National Police questioned on Friday Bima Arya, the mayor of Bogor, West Java, as a witness in a graft case involving former deputy law and human rights minister Denny Indrayana.

'€œWe questioned [Bima] as a witness in Denny Indrayana'€™s case,'€ the National Police'€™s anticorruption directorate chief, Sr. Comr. Ahmad Wiyagus, said on Friday.

Bima had been questioned for two hours at the National Police headquarters in South Jakarta, Ahmad said.

Police have named Denny a suspect in a graft case related to the procurement of equipment for the ministry'€™s online passport payment system, also known as a '€œpayment gateway'€.

The online passport payment service was launched on July 14 last year, when Denny was serving as deputy minister. The program was halted abruptly in October after it was discovered that the ministry had yet to authorize it to start.

The police have insisted there is enough evidence to charge Denny, pointing out that he had authorized the two companies involved to open a single bank account where funds from the payment gateway were to be deposited before being transferred to the state treasury.

The project cost Rp 32 billion (US$2.4 million), which the police regard as losses to the state.

Separately, Bima said police investigators had asked him about his role in the case as he had volunteered as one of the models in a video to promote the payment gateway. The video, he added, had been played at the launch of the program.
