he National Police have said Bali Police investigators are not sure what motivated Margriet Christina Megawe, 60, to allegedly kill her 8-year-old adoptive child, Engeline, although they have named her as a suspect.
'The motive behind the murder of Engeline is still unknown. Today, we are going to carry out our first questioning of her [Margriet] as a suspect,' National Police chief Gen.Badrodin Haiti as quoted by kompas.com in Jakarta on Monday.
The police chief said investigators would dig up information from Margriet to find the motive for the killing. In the first examination, he further said, investigators would also strengthen the murder charges against Margriet and they would determine whether the case could be categorized as a planned murder or just a cruel treatment that eventually led to the death of the victim.
'We will also find other suspects. We will have to continuously develop the case as long as it is in line with legal facts,' said Badrodin.
The body of Engeline was found buried in the backyard of her family's house on Jl. Sedap Malam, Denpasar, Bali, on May 10.
On Sunday, the police named Margriet as a suspect for premeditated murder.
'Margriet is charged with Article 340 and 338 of the Criminal Code on premeditated murder, as well as child abandonment articles for which we earlier named her as a suspect,' said Bali Police spokesperson Sr.Comr. Hery Wiyanto. (ebf)(++++)
