Gatot to discuss military modernization during fit and proper test

C

andidate for the position of Indonesian Military (TNI) commander Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo will undergo a fit and proper test at the House of Representatives in Jakarta on Wednesday with the issue of the Hercules C-130 plane that went down in Medan on Tuesday set to form part of the discussion.

Members of the House Commission I overseeing defense, intelligence and foreign affairs said upon hearing of the crash that Gatot would be informed about the importance of modernizing military equipment in order to prevent such accidents.

According to the flight manifest, there were 113 people on board the plane '€” 12 crew and 101 passengers '€” when it crashed leaving no survivors.

'€œThe accident serves as a red light for the military, which urgently needs to upgrade its equipment. This will be discussed at Gen. Gatot'€™s fit and proper test to see his response toward this urgency,'€ Commission I chairman Mahfudz Siddiq said on Tuesday.

Mahfudz added that he hoped the next TNI commander would not continue the tradition of buying or acquiring used aircraft or ships for the TNI.

Meanwhile, NasDem Party lawmaker and Commission I member Supiadin said on Wednesday that the government and the TNI must halt the practice of receiving used equipment from other countries in order to reduce the risk of such accidents occurring.

Gatot'€™s fit and proper test is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. (hhr)(++++)
