he National Democrat (NasDem) Party walked out of a House of Representative plenary session on Wednesday, signaling its opposition to the House's recent decision to approve a constituency fund bill.
Representing the opposition, NasDem deputy faction chair Johnny G Plate staged the walkout after expressing opposition to the bill, which allows the allocation of Rp 20 billion (US$1.5 million) to each member for the development of their respective electoral districts.
'We are withdrawing from this discussion on the constituency fund plan because we feel the approved plan does not guarantee equal development throughout all regions. We will not be responsible for the misappropriation of state funds,' Johnny said to the plenary meeting, which was held to hear the perspective of each party.
Johnny and a small number of NasDem party members proceeded to leave the meeting room.
Johnny's remarks were loudly interrupted by Golkar lawmaker Mukhamad Misbakhun, who made constant interruptions during Johnny's speech.
'The time for debate has already passed,' Misbakhun said.
However, before exiting the room, Johnny shook hands with Misbakhun, a wry smile on his face.
The meeting continued in the absence of the NasDem party. (ika)(+++)
