he Indonesian E-Commerce Association (idEA) has attempted to ease concerns over a recent alleged case of online shopping fraud implicating e-commerce giant Lazada by saying that the case was not a serious issue.
'The association does not consider it a main issue at all. It was just part of daily problems,' association chairman Daniel Tumiwa told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.
Scam concerns recently arose following reports that a Jakarta-based consumer named Danis Darusman received a bar of soap instead of an iPhone 6 Plus he had ordered from Lazada. Danis voiced his complaint on social media, which went viral.
Despite the alleged fraud, Daniel said the number of online shopping crimes was minuscule compared to the volume of transactions.
'Online fraud accounts for less than 1 percent of all e-commerce transactions,' he said, adding that e-commerce in Indonesia was flourishing.
The association estimates that the e-commerce market in Indonesia would be valued at Rp 295 trillion (US$22 billion) in 2016, a steep increase from Rp 94.5 trillion in 2013.
According to Daniel, Lazada had the capacity to deal with the alleged case.
Lazada, which is currently investigating the alleged online scam, runs its business by acting as online retailer and marketplace for other merchants.
The company has an inventory of at least 25,000 products in 13 categories, with its official website lazada.co.id featuring a wide range of big brands, such as Apple, Samsung and Sony. (alm)(+++)
