Staple foods contribute more than 50% of June'€™s inflation: BPS

C

entral Statistics Agency (BPS) head Suryamin said on Wednesday that staple foods contributed more than 50 percent of this year'€™s June inflation, which reached 0.54 percent (month-on-month).

'€œStaple foods'€™ inflation has remained high, reaching 1.6 percent or contributing 0.33 percent or almost 61 percent to the total inflation in June,'€ Suryamin said as quoted by Antara news agency at a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He said increases in demand for staple foods during the fasting month of Ramadhan and ahead of Idul Fitri had pushed inflationary pressure of several commodities such as rice, shallots, eggs and fruits.

'€œStill, the 0.54 percent inflation is controlled relatively well,'€ said Suryamin.

He said that compared to June'€™s inflation in the last five years, except June 2013, this year'€™s June inflation was lower. From 2010 to 2014, June inflation was recorded at 0.97 percent, 0.55 percent, 0.62 percent, 1.03 percent and 0.43 percent.

'€œFrom 2010 to 2013, June was quite far away from the fasting month of Ramadhan, while in June this year, we have entered the fasting month. So we can say that inflation control has been quite successful,'€ said Suryamin.

According to the BPS, June'€™s inflation occurred due to price hikes shown by increases in all spending group indexes, namely staple foods which recorded 1.60 percent inflation, followed by processed foods, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco (0.55 percent) and housing, tap water, electricity, gas and fuel (0.23 percent).

Meanwhile, health spending recorded 0.32 percent inflation in June, followed by clothing (0.28 percent); education, recreation and sports (0.07 percent); and transportation, communication and financial services (0.11 percent).

This year'€™s June inflation was recorded at 0.54 percent with a Consumer Price Index (IHK) of 120.14. Of 82 IHK cities surveyed, 76 cities suffered inflation while six cities recorded deflation. (ebf)(++++)
