Unlicensed: A commuter orders an Uber ride through a smartphone app on June 22

Your comments on Jakarta Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama, who has threatened to continue seizing cars and drivers working through the app known as Uber if the company fails to register the operation of its business.
I say to the drivers of Uber cars: Ahok will settle it. He takes care of business. So far I haven't seen any peculiarity in him.

Based on Land Transport Regulation No. 35/2003, both should fall under article 30 of rental vehicles. The Organda screwed it up by pushing the Police to follow article 30 and categorize Uber as a taxicab company. Uber and Gojek definitely provide better and easier transportation through their apps and it is legal to use black license plates based on the regulation for rentals.
The difference between Uber and Gojek is their status as legal entities in Indonesia. PT Gojek has established a liability company (PT) to ensure local contacts are available and to secure taxation processes.
I see Governor Ahok has advised Uber a couple times now specifically on this PT establishment. The question is: what is Uber waiting for?

Also, what about the arrested drivers? It was never mentioned that they have commercial car rental licenses.

Uber's local management dropped the ball badly. It is unfortunate because IMHO Uber offers an innovation in transportation that will benefit both the riders and operators.
Uber Indonesia has a big PR task ahead of them. Fortunately, the advantages of the Uber concept, regardless of how people will try to kill it, can withstand all challenges both in terms of cost effectiveness and rider and operator safety. So if described and presented properly, it is a powerful logic that is hard to reject.
I support the Uber concept. It is a sound business concept.

Uber and Avanza? I always thought that their service offered transportation with some kind of middle-class car but not this kind of substandard vehicle as the one in the picture.

Don't mess with the business elites of Indonesia like you do in the West. The game is closed.

Foreigners can own flats
In a bid to boost investment and capital inflow, the government will, in an unprecedented move, allow foreigners to own apartments in Indonesia. The government plans, however, to limit the assets to those valued at a minimum of Rp 5 billion (US$375,000). What do you think?
