Malaysian long-haul budget carrier AirAsia has introduced a new Internet service that will enable passengers to send tweets from planes
Malaysian long-haul budget carrier AirAsia has introduced a new Internet service that will enable passengers to send tweets from planes.
The service was the result of cooperation between AirAsia and RoKKI, an in-flight entertainment and connectivity provider, Twitter business development director for South Asia, Arbinder Gujral, said as quoted by kompas.com on Thursday.
Meanwhile, AirAsia chief executive officer Tony Fernandes introduced the service in a tweet sent from an AK5208 flight traveling from Kuala Lumpur to Kuching, Malaysia.
"Posting my first tweet from 30,000ft. And now you can, too. Congrats @rokki_official for bringing @Twitter to @AirAsia," he tweeted on Tuesday.
The new service follows AirAsia's previous onboard WiFi service allowing passengers to access the Internet on planes.
AirAsia will offer the service in a package worth RM9 (US$2.39) for 3 megabytes of mobile data. With the package, AirAsia will not only be able to access Twitter, but also WeChat, WhatsApp, LINE and KakaoTalk. Initially, the service will be offered on 4000 of AirAsia's flights but the numbers are expected to increase.
A similar in-flight Internet service has also been introduced by British airline Virgin Atlantic, which offers free Facebook access to its customers. (ika)(++++)
