he police's disaster victim identification (DVI) team has vowed to be transparent in identifying all victims of the recent Hercules tragedy in Medan, North Sumatra.
'This task is a humanitarian mission. There will be nothing to hide,' head of the National Police's medical center Brig. Gen. Arthur Tampi said at the Adam Malik General Hospital in Medan on Thursday.
He said the identification process would go on openly and all relatives of the victims would be given access to information about the whole process.
'Give us a chance to work well. We will work professionally,' he said.
Arthur said the DVI team would work professionally to ensure accuracy in the identification process because misidentification would lead to the wrong handover of victims to their relatives.
'We do not want to hand over bodies of the victims to the wrong relatives. We will do our best to avoid such a mistake,' he said as quoted by kompas.com.
Until Wednesday evening, the DVI team had identified 82 bodies of more than 130 victims killed in the tragedy and has already handed them over to their relatives for funerals. (rms)(++++)
