-commerce marketplace Elevenia has denied rumors that it was behind a recent online shopping fraud case implicating its competitor, Lazada.
Elevenia marketing division vice president Madeleine Ong De Guzman said on Thursday the alleged scam had nothing to do with business competition between the two companies, asserting that the incident was 'incidental'.
'We have communicated with each other. Both of us understand that the case was completely unintentional,' Madeleine said.
'There was no any smear campaign [perpetrated against Elevenia's competitor].'
The case began when a man identifying himself as Danis Darusman tweeted on his Twitter account that he had received a bar of soap instead of the iPhone he had ordered from Lazada. Danis' complaint on the flawed online shopping service went viral, with hundreds of Twitter users retweeting his grievance.
It was later confirmed that Danis was an Elevenia employee.
Madeleine said Elevenia had no any intention of taking advantage by carrying out online shopping fraud, saying that the case would instead damage Indonesia's e-commerce market in the long run.
'E-commerce players in Indonesia are striving to build trust with their online consumers, but the case has disrupted the whole market,' she said.
The case is currently being investigated by Lazada. (alm/ebf)(+++)
