Stocks closed higher Wednesday as investors became optimistic that a deal could be struck on Greece's debt issues. Hopes were raised after Greece's government appeared to soften its stance toward its creditors. However, European officials ruled out any deal before a Greek referendum on the matter, scheduled for this weekend.
For the day:
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 138.40 points, or 0.8 percent, to 17,757.91.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index climbed 14.31 points, or 0.7 percent, to 2,077.42.
The Nasdaq composite gained 26.26 points, or 0.5 percent, to 5,013.12.
For the week:
The Dow is down 188.77 points, or 1.1 percent.
The S&P 500 index is down 24.07 points, or 1.2 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 67.38 points, or 1.3 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is down 65.16 points, or 0.4 percent.
The S&P 500 index is up 18.52 points, or 0.9 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 277.07 points, or 5.9 percent. (hhr)
