he Bengkulu General Elections Commission (KPUD) has dropped the only aspiring independent candidate pair from the gubernatorial election following their failure to gather the minimum support of 192,000 local residents.
The candidate pair, Mukomuko Regent Ichwan Yunus and running mate Rahmat Elvi, previously submitted signatures and copies of ID cards from 200,000 residents with the KPUD to support their nomination.
The KPUD's initial count, however, found that only 174,000 ID cards were considered valid, prompting the pair to file a lawsuit with the Regional Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu).
'Responding to the lawsuit, Bawaslu granted a recount and it turned out that the candidate only secured 166,000 valid ID cards,' KPUD head Irwan Saputra was quoted as saying by Antara news service on Wednesday.
