National Police chief Gen
ational Police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti said that he would look into a report saying that a policeman from Batanghari, Jambi, had joined the Islamic State (IS) in Syria and was recently killed in a bomb attack.
'This is only speculative information. We will have to verify first,' Badrodin told reporters.
The policeman, identified only as Brigadier S, has been missing after leaving his home to travel to Medan, North Sumatra earlier this year.
Parents of the police officer later found that their son had resigned from the force and traveled to Malaysia.
From Malaysia, S traveled to Syria to join scores of jihadists from Indonesia who were already embroiled in the conflict zone.
More than 350 Indonesians are said to have joined IS in the past two years. About one-third left Indonesia specifically to go to Syria, while the rest were already studying or working in the Middle East before they decided to fight alongside the militant group in its attempt set up a separate state.
On December 27, six people planning to travel to Syria were arrested at Soekarno-Hatta international airport. They were charged with using falsified documents to apply for their passport.
